At Twitter, do you need to be a follower to be followed?

Twitter gurus keep on telling us that you need to follow to have followers. That’s probably true in order to spread your wings. After all, Twitter is a networking site.

We are just curious if a Twitter-er can have followers without following other Twitter-ers. Yes, we have seen Twitter-ers with thousands of “followers” with zero updates. But they are also following thousands of Twitter-ers (more than their followers) who most must have mainly automated their account such that when someone follows them, they in turn reciprocate and follow the followers.

So here comes Pinoyjokes.net, our company’s Filipino humour site which is ranked among the top 3 for “Filipino jokes”.

We created a Twitter account for Pinoyjokes.net about a month ago. Because it was set up as a defensive account, we did not intend to post updates or to follow other Twitter-ers.

The first follower was reported by Twitter auto-email on June 11. Followed by another follower on June 15. Then the next follower came in June 17. No updates.

Without causing unnecessary embarassment to those following Twitter: @pinoyjokesnet who were following without any updates from us, we started posting updates last June 20.

As of date, we have about 7 updates, mostly truncated jokes from the Pinoyjokes.net website. We also installed a Tweetme plugin to provide Pinoyjokers the facility to tweet the jokes ~ if they have a Twitter account.

We will revisit this post after a few weeks and see the results.
