The truth about comment spams at emanila

in Blog, Side Notes

Like other sites using blogging platforms, emanila has not been spared from the upsurge of comment spams in the last few months.

The principal target is emanilapoetry where as of latest count, Akismet, a companion spam-checking service to WordPress, has reported 15,584 spams since we first installed WP. The numbers are almost 4 times the legitimate comments now appearing on emanilapoetry.

Other targets are The Filipino Australian, Cooltext.org which had only a WordPress install for less than 3 months, PinoyJokes.net and our photogalleries at www.emanila.com/gallery and www.thefilipinoaustralian.com/photogallery.

The question is: What are we doing about this?

Aside from installing additional spam checkers in our sites, for now, nothing! After all, all comment spams are “quarantined” in a separate folder, not shown to the public and eventually deleted.

We will leave our present commenting structure as is.

We do not see any major reason why we have to install stringent requirements in our websites which will prevent legitimate users from interacting with each other.

emanila started 10 years as an online community to provide its members and users a platform where they can express their views and share their thoughts freely.

And we would like to see emanila and all its affiliated websites staying that way.

Akismet has done a good job to protect my blogsite against spam comments at wordpress.com.
